Two days earlier, the sheriff's office posted on Facebook, saying "a massive search effort is being launched for the missing Chinese National Yunlong Chen who was reported missing in March of this year". The Vail Mountain Rescue Group would lead the search efforts.

"This large operation is bringing together approximately 60 professional searchers and will involve the use of UAV's (drones), search dogs and hikers on Vail Mountain and the surrounding areas. The community can expect to see activity and possibly a 'Flight For Life Colorado' helicopter assisting."

The sheriff's office said, the rescue group was hindered and limited by snow and weather during previous searches.
