The first Chinese-developed four-seater electric airplane has successfully completed a test flight, China Central Television reported.

The RX4E is 8.4 meters long and has a wingspan of 13.5 meters. A 70kWh battery pack allows the aircraft to cruise for a maximum of 90 minutes at a speed of up to 200 kilometers per hour. The range, 300 kilometers on a full charge, is expected to increase as the battery capacity becomes bigger.

A report by Xinhua News Agency says the plane is able to take off and land on terrain including grass and sand, as well as at coastal airports.

The TX4E can be used for purposes such as transportation, pilot training, sightseeing and aerial measurement, according to China News.

"It's most distinctive feature is it has no pollution, because it's electric. It is substantially different from planes that run on fuel. It's low maintenance as well," says Zhao Tienan, deputy chief of the Liaoning General Aviation Research Institute, which developed the aircraft.
