Primary school students in Shanghai read 8.42 books per year, seven fewer than their parents' expectations, a survey on the reading habits of local students revealed.
Over 70 percent of the parents surveyed expect their kids to read at least 15 books per year. However, among the 94,000 pupils surveyed, less than half have met that expectation.
Over half spend more than 3 hours reading per week, but only 17 percent can spare one hour on reading per day.
Novels, popular science and picture books are the most popular genres among parents. Most parents said they choose books for their children based on reading lists recommended by the school and the personal interests of their child.
