Can you get your deposit back after using the service?

Deposit is a sum of money paid in advance before you rent an item to ensure it is returned in a good condition. Deposit is required in various businesses, such as bike-sharing services, public transportation card, and renting accommodations. 

After finish using the service, full amount of the deposit shall be returned to the renter if the item is not damaged. If the item is returned with damage beyond normal wear and tear, the cost of repairing the damage shall be charged against the deposit, and part (or none) of the deposit will be returned.

However, it is not as simple and easy as you think to get your deposit back. It is reported that the Beijing Municipal Industrial and Commercial Bureau have received 589 complaints from users of bike-sharing services. They cannot be refunded the money remained in their account, have to wait for a long time to get their deposit back, and have difficulties in accessing to the customer service.

According to Xiong Dingzhong from a lawyer's office in Beijing, there is no clear regulation about deposit in Chinese laws.
