A Chinese healthcare and pharmaceutical specialist has revealed plans to locate a new Research and Development (R and D) centre in South Wales.

Acerchem, who have already established a relationship with the University of Swansea, will base nearly 40 new staff at the site in the city. The development has also been made possible thanks to an investment of £600,000 by the Welsh government.

Alongside the roles in R and D, the new base will also house the company's European base alongside some manufacturing facilities.

There are also plans to use the site to enhance cooperation between Acerchem and the University of Swansea.

The announcement is just the latest in a series of positive developments in cooperation between China and the UK when it comes to healthcare.

In February, we revealed that British Minister for Asia and the Pacific, Alok Sharma, had visited China, hoping to help boost health ties between the two countries.

China's ageing population will require a growing number of doctors and nurses over the next few years. As a leader in healthcare training, the UK is well-placed to be a partner with China to help achieve that requirement.

Britain is also home to a number of global healthcare companies - for now. During his speech, Mr. Sharma sought to reassure the audience that Brexit would not be a barrier to these companies.

His comments seem to echo the positive sentiments of Acerchem, who are clearly not too worried about the impact of Brexit on their new European HQ.
