According to figures from the Singapore-based analysis company Canalys, the top four brands in the new retail market list sold 23 million, 21 million, 16 million and 15 million smartphones respectively, accounting for 75% of the 113 million retail shipments in the second quarter.

Huawei saw a 20.2% year-on-year sales growth in the quarter, compared to 16.9% in the same period last year. Xiaomi also saw an increased pace in year-on-year sales, from 11.2% last year to 13% in 2017.

"Xiaomi continues to offer the best value in the Chinese market and it remains the top choice for price-conscious consumers. E-commerce platforms remain key to Xiaomi's marketing campaigns. In this quarter, it demonstrated excellent performance during the shopping festival initiated by T-mall and JD.com," said Lucio Chen, Canalys Research Analyst.

Apple failed to top the sales chart in China in 2016, a position it had held since 2012, according to a report from Counterpoint Technology Market Research.

Samsung is also among the top 10 smartphone brands in China.
