"With respect to this case, we currently have an intention to acquire. We are interested in (FCA)," a company official in Great Wall's press relations department told Reuters.

It was reported earlier on Monday that Great Wall had asked for a meeting with FCA with the aim of making an offer for all or part of the Italian-American auto group.

But this wasn't the only Great Wall news on Monday, the car industry magazine Automotive News said that Great Wall had contacted FCA to express an interest specifically in its Jeep brand, citing an email from Great Wall President Wang Fengying.

One FCA brand, the world famous Jeep, celebrated its 75th birthday last year. Following the Great Wall rumours, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles shares grew by 3.5% in Milan.

FCA also owns Alfa Romeo, Maserati and RAM trucks as well as the Fiat and Chrysler brands.
