Suning's first intelligent self-service store in Shanghai equipped with a face recognition payment system made its debut on Monday, thepaper.cn reported.

Suning Biu, an unmanned store where customers can pay via facial recognition machines, is reportedly the second of its kind Chinese retail giant Suning has launched in China.

With an area of about 100 square meters, the new store is much larger and provides more varied product categories than the company's first unmanned shop in Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province, the location of Suning's headquarters.

After downloading an app and uploading their personal information including a photo of their face and a bank card, customers can enter the shop and start shopping by scanning their face.

The payment process is also completed automatically.

Without having to scan QR or barcodes to calculate prices, clients just need to step into a specific "payment area" at the exit and look at an overhead camera for facial recognition.

Except for a few staff in the store offering technical instructions, the entire process will be completed by customers themselves, which saves time and reduces labor costs.

"Self-service stores are a new offline platform to provide retail service and a part of Suning Commerce. The self-service stores are expected to be introduced to other cities in China to improve the consumer self-service experience," said Fan Zhijun, vice CEO of suning.com and general manager of Suning's Shanghai Chain.
