A 32-year-old Iraqi refugee who was found guilty of raping two Chinese students has been sentenced to 11 years behind bars, Germany's international broadcaster Deutsche Welle reports.

The defendant, identified as Ziyad K, was convicted of sexually assaulting two Chinese victims, aged 21 and 27, in August and November 2016, near Germany's Ruhr-University in Bochum, western Germany.

He was convicted on Tuesday in the town court in Bochum.

The court says he should have to serve half his sentence (5 years and 6 months) before being considered for repatriation.

During the trial, regional chief prosecutor Andreas Bachmann said that despite the fact that the offender had inflicted "unending pain" on the victims, he "has never demonstrated any signs of remorse," nor ever felt sorry for them, Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung (WAZ) reports.

Dr. Maren Losch, a psychology expert, confirmed that the offender is "fully mentally competent" as he has a "normal psychological profile" and does not suffer from any mental disorders.

She also said that the offender was fully aware of his actions during the incidents and knew they were a crime.

Arrested by local police in Bochum last December, the defendant refused to make a statement after his sentencing on Tuesday, Russia Today reports.
