For the first time in China's Sichuan province, a woman has called off divorce proceedings following a three-month cooling off period, reports the Chengdu Economic Daily.

The interim divorce period notice was issued by the local county court in March this year, aiming to give the couple from Anyue County time to calm down and reconsider their marriage.

The notice was the first to be issued in Sichuan province.

The presiding judge in the case, Li Hongting, said the couple are young and their problems had been caused in general by trivial matters, and so the court believe the couple filed for divorce on impulse.

Jiang Xinru from the Anyue county court said since the first notice was issued in March this year, the court has dealt with around 100 divorce cases but has issued only six interim divorce period notices.

Such notices call for mediation, and are issued where it's believed marriages are still retrievable, said Jiang.

But argue that once a couple sues for divorce, the breakdown of their marriage is always irretrievable. They say that cooling off periods are unnecessary and a waste of judicial resources.
