Guangzhou to Hong Kong high-speed rail link for 2018 completion

The final phase of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong high-speed rail service has been given a start date of the third quarter of 2018, according to MTR, the Hong Kong railway company.

Travel times will be dramatically cut, with the journey from Guangzhou and Hong Kong down from two hours to just 48 minutes. The journey from Shenzhen to Hong Kong will be just 15 minutes, less than a third of the current duration.

142 kilometers long, with the mainland section is designed for speeds of 350 km/h, and tunnels under the Pearl River to Humen in Dongguan before heading south to Shenzhen.

Large parts of the 116 kilometer Hong Kong stretch is underground and will terminate at a new station in West Kowloon.

The line is expected to transfer 109,000 passengers per day.
