A woman who broke a valuable jade bracelet while trying it on in a shop in Yunnan Province has failed to agree compensation terms with the retailer.

The shopper had a panic attack and fainted after breaking the item, which had a price tag of 300,000 yuan (more than USD 44,000). The staff in the store rushed to her aid and called the emergency services.

Despite several attempts at mediation, the two sides have been unable to agree on the level of compensation.

According to an appraisal conducted by the Gems and Jewelry Trade Association of Ruili, the value of the jade bracelet was said to be 180,000 yuan (26,551 in U.S. dollars), much less than the asking price in the shop.

The two sides have agreed to take the compensation case to court.

The case has stirred comments online with some saying it’s only right for the tourist to compensate the store, with others suggesting the bracelet was clearly overpriced.
