A new campaign to establish QR codes on the doorplates of homes in Jinan, capital of Shandong Province has been launched, reports local newspaper The Jinan Times.

This follows the completion of a new database which contains information about who owns the city's houses and buildings.

Any changes to the information can be automatically updated through the internet by local authorities.

Buy scanning the residential QR codes through WeChat, people will be given access to detailed information about the area where the homes are located, as well as the location of the local Public Security Bureau station. A new program being trialed in Jinan also allows people to contact an officer through WeChat through a new "Didi-like" system.

The new residential QR codes will also allow homeowners to update renters' information on the internet without having to go to the local police station directly.
