27-year-old Wei Qiujie works at an elementary school in China's southeastern Fujian province and had travelled to Japan for a solo trip.

According to her family, she had been staying at a hotel in Sapporo, the capital of Hokkaido, but didn’t return on July 22. The hotel reported her missing to local police the next day. Her luggage was left at the hotel.

Information provided by an airline shows that Wei has booked to fly back to Shanghai on Tuesday. There is no record of her boarding the plane, rescheduling or cancelling her ticket.

Her last "appearance" on social media was on July 23rd.

Her family say they are concerned that she may have been kidnapped or is being physically controlled.

There have been a number of recent cases where Chinese women have been targeted abroad. Earlier this month, two Chinese sisters were found dead in a forest in Kanagawa, southwest Japan, after being reported missing.

The sisters also came from Fujian province. Local police have arrested a Japanese man in his thirties on suspicion of killing the two girls.
