Domestic patriotic action film "Wolf Warrior 2" has been topping the Chinese box office in only 13 days since hitting theatres, grossing 3.4 billion yuan as of August 7, 2017. This comes in ahead of the 3.392 billion in total box office revenues earned by "Mermaid" during the same period in February, 2016.

Producers of "Mermaid" have sent out their congratulations to the people behind "Wolf Warrior 2" through Weibo. "Wolf Warrior 2" director Wu Jing has returned the praise with a 'thank you' post on Weibo of his own.

In accepting the praise, Wu Jing has remained grounded. "All records are meant to be broken," Wu Jing wrote. "Wolf Warrior 2's box office will be exceeded. But in the end, the creators of a miracle are always the audience," said Wu.

The huge popularity of "Wolf Warrior 2" has also generated a new phrase on the internet in China: "Spiritual shareholder." This term is said to describe how enthusiastic fans of a film, such as "Wolf Warrior 2," become so invested in its popularity that they continually track its box office results, much like an investor would track a favored stock.
