It's been revealed that China eats more ice cream than any other country.

If you're surprised to hear that, then you probably also don't know that China is the spiritual home of ice cream.

Indeed, our favourite frozen treat is believed to have been invented in the country over 2,000 years ago, when a milk and rice mixture was frozen by packing it into snow.

The latest sales figures show that Chinese people consumed 3.3 billion litres of ice cream last year.

That's an astonishing quarter of worldwide consumption, which totals 13 billion litres.

As impressive as that sounds, the Chinese are beaten only by Norwegians when it comes to who eats the most ice cream per capita.

In Norway, they get through nearly ten litres of the stuff each, every year. (As an ice cream lover, that figure actually sounds quite low to me!)

However, it's not just in consumption that China is ahead - it's also taken a lead in pioneering new flavour combinations.

Flavours such as ginger, honey, cinnamon, soy (yes, soy) and cardamom might be very traditional in Chinese cuisine, but they're only now beginning to make it into mainstream ice creams.
