Imported clothing destroyed by Shanghai customs

A batch of imported Victoria's Secret under garments has been destroyed by Shanghai customs after being found to contain excessive formaldehyde, thecover.cn reports.

Five batches of imported clothes by Ralph Lauren have also been destroyed after found containing an excessive PH index count, as well as faulty buttons and belts on children's clothing.

Officials say textiles with a high pH index count could lead to skin allergies, while excessive exposure to formaldehyde can lead to headaches, dermatitis, respiratory disease, eczema and even more serious poisoning.

Officials do say the Victoria's Secret products currently on-sale in the Chinese market are safe.

In total, 400 batches of substandard clothes from overseas have been destroyed in Shanghai since March. The clothes had a total value of about 300,000 U.S. dollars.

There's been no official response from Victoria's Secret so far.

This year's Victoria's Secret Fashion Show is scheduled to be held in Shanghai in November.

It will be the first time in history that the Victoria's Secret Angels show will be filmed in Asia.
