Newly-printed TCM textbooks are being distributed among schools in Zhejiang, which is the first province to start teaching the centuries-old tradition in primary schools.

The move has started to generate a lot of interest online.

Supporters of Traditional Chinese Medicine suggest the move is going to benefit the children in the long run, as well as keep the TCM traditions alive.

Others argue the techniques and philosophies behind the practice are too complex for a child in the fifth grade to comprehend.

Fang Jianqiao, editor-in-chief of the new textbook, argues that TCM is a practice which has roots dating back some 5,000 years, giving teachers a lot of options when passing the information on.

"Combining historical stories and figures with the basic content of TCM, including TCM basic theory, health care, exercise, diet, emotion, acupuncture and massage, should make the material accessible to fifth grade pupils," said Fang.
