The city of Sanmenxia in Henan province has brought in laws to protect the tens of thousands swans that spend winter at its wetlands.

The laws divide the habitat into 3 parts according to their importance and prioritize the application.

Boating, fishing activities are prohibited within key reserve areas, and drones, kites and other flying objects are banned from October to March each year, the main protection period.

The Sanmenxia reserves have become the biggest swan habitat in China thanks to effective protection efforts in the past few years.

About half of the total number of swans in China migrate to its wetlands in winter.
