A group of four women have opened up a special kitchen to provide free meals to the disadvantaged in the city of Changzhi, Shanxi Province, reports chinanews.com.

39 year old Xie Danqin and three of her friends put together 100-thousand yuan (around 15 thousand U.S. dollars) to set up a vegetarian restaurant which provides free lunches for the elderly and the disabled.

Serving over 200 people per day, the restaurant has already served around 6,000 people since it opened a month ago.

Since launching the "soup kitchen," the group says numerous people have started providing additional financial support.

Service staff are all volunteers, including many who have enjoyed the free meal.

"The idea of starting this came from my previous experience doing volunteer work," said Xie Danqin, "I hope that we can help people in need, and also promote a spirit of volunteerism as well."
