Officials say two unsanctioned fundraising events were held at the No. 2 Middle School in Tianquan County through its parents committee in February and November. Each parent was asked to donate 1,000 to 1,200 yuan (around 150-180 US dollars).

Some 1.46 million yuan was collected for after-class services although none has been used so far.

Irregularities in fundraising in various sectors over the past years have promoted government ban on such activities done by unauthorized institutions across the country.

Investigations have shown that the fundraising inside the school is in violation of relevant regulations by the Ministry of Education and the school authorities are responsible for the wrong doing.

Local authorities say all the money will be returned to the parents.

Leading officials with the county Education Bureau have also been hit with warnings.
