A magnitude 5 earthquake hit Wulong county of southwest China's Chongqing Municipality at 5:43 p.m. Thursday, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.

The epicenter was monitored at 29.4 degrees north latitude and 107.94 degrees east longitude.

The quake struck at a depth of about 10 km.

The tremor was felt strongly in Chongqing's city districts such as Yubei and Shapingba.

The municipal earthquake administration has sent experts and rescuers to the quake zone.

Wulong is home to the scenic area Wulong Karst, which was named as a world natural heritage by UNESCO in 2007. Scenes for the Hollywood blockbuster "Transformers 4: Age of Extinction" were partly filmed in the area.
