China National Nuclear Corporation has officially unveiled a 400-megawatt low-temp thermo nuclear reactor in Beijing.

It is reportedly the largest project of its kind in development around the world.

Ke Guotu is the chief designer of the Yanlong low-temp thermo nuclear reactor.

"This reactor has three water pools, retaining 5,000 tons of water in total. Even if an earthquake or tsunami happened to the reactor, making it unable to stop, the water in it cannot be dried within a month, and the reactor will not melt down unless the water is boiled away," said Ke.

The reactor can provide clean heating for 200-thousand three-bedroom homes, with its thermal power reaching 400 megawatts and the capacity to cover an area of around 20 million square meters.

It can reportedly replace the use of 320-thousand tons of coal, thus reducing 3,200 tons of emissions as well as 100-thousand tons of ash at the same costs.

The low-temp thermo nuclear reactor for central heating has been used by countries such as Russia and Switzerland for over 30 years.

China started research in this area in the 1980s.
