On December 10, 2017, Li Guowu, a 43-year-old former soldier, was on patrol outside a residential building in Xi'an, capital of northwest China's Shaanxi Province, where he saw a woman standing on a window ledge.

Li shouted at the woman not to jump. He then rushed forward, stretching out his arms in an attempt to catch the falling woman.

The woman fell on Li, and both of them died at the scene, according to a surveillance video, Chinese Business View reported.

A preliminary investigation has ruled out foul play, police said.

Li's courageous move has sparked attention.

In his comments regarding the incident, Shangguan Jiqing, mayor of Xi'an, expressed his support for nominating Li for a government award created to honor brave citizens.

According to reports, the company Li worked for has already launched the application process.

Local authorities also contacted Li's company, offering assistance in the administrative procedures for the application of Li's work-related injury insurance.

On December 13, Liang Yi, an official from the local Human Social Resources and Social Security Bureau, handed Li's Work-related Injury Certification to his relatives.

With this documentation, Li's family will receive compensation of over 700,000 yuan, including a lump sum work-related death allowance and funeral allowance, according to relevant laws and regulations.

Li's six-year-old daughter will also be paid a monthly allowance of 1,140 yuan until adulthood.

Local residents were touched by Li's actions, and many have provided financial support to the man's family.

An entrepreneur even volunteered to provide for Li's daughter's educational expenses.

The relatives of the woman have also apologized to Li's family, showing a willingness to make up for their loss, reported the Chinese Business View.
