The drone being developed Sichuan Tengdun Technology weighs around 45 tons, and will be able to carry 20 tons. It will have a maximum range of 7,500 kilometers, and will be able to make heights of up to 12,000 meters. It will have a wing span of 42 meters.

The company says it's developing the massive UAV for air cargo, as well as forest fire prevention, emergency disaster relief and high-precision remote mapping.

Production of the new drone is expected to be complete in two and a half years, with testing scheduled for 2020.

Fan Yi, vice mayor of Sichuan's provincial capital, Chengdu, says the creation of the drone will help develop the aerospace industry in the city.

There are more than 110 UAV makers in Chengdu already, with the industry generating some 4.2 billion yuan (about 635 million U.S. dollars) in 2017.
