Chinese people are showing the biggest faith in the Chinese government and the media, while trust in the U.S. government has plummeted in the first year since Donald Trump assumed office, according to 2018 Edelman Trust Barometer Global Report, reports Reuters.

The Edelman survey was conducted in 28 countries and regions. 33,000 people ranging from the general public to well-educated high-income earners were asked to give their thoughts on the government, corporations, media and NGOs in their own country.

In the survey, Chinese citizens put a great amount of trust in the Chinese government, up 8 percent to 84 percent, while trust in U.S. institutions, especially the government, plummeted 14 percent to 33 percent. The survey suggests American citizens believe that NGOs are more reliable.

"The United States is enduring an unprecedented crisis of trust," said Richard Edelman, head of the communications marketing firm that commissioned the research.

He added that it was the first time since the survey began 18 years ago that a drop of this size isn't linked to a specific event, such as an economic crisis or catastrophe.
