Over 90 children became ill after eating lunch on Monday at the kindergarten. Close to 60 of them had to be held overnight in hospital for additional observation. None of the children are suffering from life-threatening illnesses.

Most suffered from vomiting and stomach cramps.

Preliminary investigations show that nitrite was mistaken for regular salt by kindergarten canteen cooks and put into the food. Nitrite is commonly used as a food preservative.

Local education authorities have shut down the kindergarten for the time being. Authorities have also ordered spot checks on kindergarten kitchens throughout the area.
