The new airport will be built in the city of Ezhou, less than one hour drive from Wuhan, the capital city of Hubei Province in central China. China's major cities can be reached by air in less than one and a half hours from the new airport. The airport will become the world's fourth largest cargo distribution hub, and the largest in Asia.

Ezhou Airport, also known as SF Airport after China's SF Express courier service, has a planned annual capacity of 1.5 million passenger and 3.3 million tons of cargo by 2030. The site will include two 3,600-meter long runways, a terminal covering 15,000 square meters, 153 parking places, and other support facilities.

The anticipated cost of the development is 37 billion yuan (5.9 billion U.S. dollars), of which 18 billion yuan (2.9 billion U.S. dollars) will be shared between the Hubei provincial government and SF Express. SF Express will fund the 17 billion yuan (3 billion U.S. dollar) transfer center and SF cargo base.
