China became the world's second largest source of international patent applications in 2017, with companies and individuals applying for a total of 48,882 patents, according to the World Intellectual Property Organization.

The hike was led by telecom companies Huawei and ZTE, which were the two largest filers of international patent applications in 2017.

The WIPO says "at current trends, [China] is projected to overtake the US within three years as the largest source of applications filed under WIPO's Patent Cooperation Treaty."
