"You have run a red light. Please return to the stop line." The voice is coming from a new intelligent monitoring system installed at the cross of Jiukeshu East Road and Liyuan North Street in Beijing's Tongzhou District. This is the city's first real-time warning for pedestrians attempting to jaywalk. It captures images of pedestrians trying to cross roads illegally, then displays them on a big screen at the intersection.

"The intelligent system integrated with the traffic lights, and includes video capture, storage, displays and other technological equipment. Not only does it play the voice prompt, but also captures images of pedestrians trying to jaywalk, displaying their pictures on the roadside screen automatically," said a traffic police officer with the district of Tongzhou.

A similar system became the first one tested in China in Shandong's provincial capital, Jinan, late last year.
