In October,2017, domestic roaming fees for long-distance calls were abolished. This was followed in March by an announcement in the government work report that domestic data roaming fees would be cut.

The change means that customers will be able to use the data on their phone plan without a surcharge as they travel around China. It also means that customers don't need to sign up to a new plan with another phone number if they move to a different city.

But it will be business as usual for most users, who will see little change to their monthly bill. "Average charges for data after the change will remain unchanged or decrease a little bit", said Fu Liang, an independent telecommunications industry analyst.
