Affordable housing development opens for Hangzhou's migrant workers

An affordable housing development targeting the city's population of migrant workers has opened in Hangzhou, in east China's Zhejiang Province. According to Qianjiang Evening News, the first renters moved in on Friday.

Located in the downtown area of Hangzhou, the development is 200 meters from the nearest subway station. There are 345 rooms avilable for rent. The smallest rooms only cost 300 yuan (46 U.S. dollars) per month, and the largest cost around 1,100 yuan.

Around one in five rooms are set up for couples and families, and have their own bathroom. The remainders are designed for single people, with every 2-3 rooms sharing a bathroom.

All of the rooms come with basic furniture so renters can easily move in. A shared kitchen, library, and kiosk are are also available.

Rooms in the development are not available for private rental. Instead, companies can apply for rooms for their workers, and most of them cover the property management, catering, security, and cleaning.

This year Hangzhou approved 38 affordable housing developments in the city, which will provide around 15,000 rooms for migrant workers. And last week, an abandoned factory building that has been turned into affordable housing opened for migrant workers in Beijing. For 1,400 yuan per month, each renter can share a four-bed room.
