An intelligent zebra crossing was recently installed in Hangzhou that lights up when pedestrians walk on it at night, reports People's Daily.

Two strips of lights have been installed that are controlled by a motion sensor triggered by pedestrians crossing the street. The crossing is in an area that is home to a large number of financial and IT enterprises, and so the street is still busy with workers leaving the office after dark.

"The lights also turn on when visibility is poor, such as on rainy or foggy days," said Chen Tieying, who works with the company that developed the crossing. Chen added that the lights were designed to cope with the physical demands of a busy urban street with cars driving over the top of it.

The motion sensors can also record real-time data about pedestrian volumes and traffic flow, which can be passed to local police to help with traffic management.

It is expected that the system will be used at other locations once the design has been fine tuned and the cost of deployment is lowered.
