The company revealed the information following an update from the police on the status of their probe into the alleged information leak.

The data breach case was reported to the police by Huazhu on August 28, 2018, following a post that had emerged online earlier that day.

The post reportedly divulged information related to Huazhu's customers, including their registration information, personal data and booking records within the group's wide range of hotel brands.

In the latest statement, the hotel group said that the message was posted by the suspects on a Dark Web forum in an attempt to sell certain data, but the attempted sale was not successful.

"Further police investigation is being conducted on the subject matter," said Huazhu, who refused to disclose additional information in accordance with laws and police protocols.

Huazhu is a public company listed in NASDAQ and runs over 3,000 hotels in more than 370 Chinese cities. It operates more than a dozen brands such as French hotel group Accor's Mercure and Ibis hotels in China as well as Hanting and Crystal Orange.
