New strain of tall growing rice successfully harvested in Chongqing
Rice was successfully harvested this week from a new strain of rice plant that grows up to two meters tall, cqwb.com.cn reported on Friday. The rice was planted as part of a trial in Chongqing, a city in China's southwest. The height of the plant makes harvesting easier.

He Yongkun, from the Academy of Meteorological Sciences in Chongqing Municipality, said that the new rice strain was developed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences over a period of ten years. The small scale trial planting that was harvested this week was started in April. He Yongkun said that using the new strain can double the grain output compared to ordinary paddy rice.
