Wang, founding director and chief scientist of the institute, is an internationally recognized researcher in the fields of nanoscience and technology.

Wang won the 2018 Eni Energy Frontiers Award for research on renewable energy sources and energy storage. The Eni Award committee recognized Wang as the founder of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), a new group of devices capable of converting naturally occurring energy into high-yielding electricity.

His research was described as "providing energy technology to power the development of the Internet of Things, robotics and artificial intelligence," according to the institute.
