A 26-year-old Chinese woman who was born without uterus now has successfully given birth to a baby boy after the woman's mother donated her uterus to the daughter.

This is reportedly the first case in China, and only the 14th in the world, where a baby has been born from a transplanted uterus.

In 2015, the then 22-year-old visited the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Xijing Hospital in the city of Xi'an in Shaanxi Province. She was worried about never having a period. After an ultrasound, she was shocked to be told that she was born without a uterus.

Her mother was determined to see her daughter have an opportunity to have children of her own, and decided to donate her uterus to her. The transplant surgery was successfully completed at the hospital in November 2015.

The new mother gave birth to a healthy two-kilogram baby boy on Sunday after a 39-week pregnancy. The event marks a breakthrough by China's doctors in the treatment of infertility.

Among women of childbearing age in China, around 1 million experience uterine infertility, according to Professor Chen Biliang, the head of the Gynecology and Obstetrics at Xijing Hospital.
