A teacher in Qingdao, Shandong Province, has chosen to stick to her post at an island school which has only one student left, the Beijing News reported on Sunday.

29-year-old Xue Qianqian is a Chinese teacher at the Zhucha Island Elementary School, about 3 kilometers east of Qingdao.

The school became an affiliated teaching site in 2017 after most of the residents of the island moved away because of the poor living conditions there.

Xue is currently teaching a second grader who will also leave when he reaches the fourth grade.

The young teacher said the student will probably have no teacher if she leaves.

"As long as there is a student at the school, I will continue to stay here," said Xue.
