Chinese mainland spokesperson stresses essence of 1992 Consensus

The 1992 Consensus is the common political foundation for the development of cross-Strait relations, a mainland spokesperson reiterated Wednesday.

Ma Xiaoguang, a spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, made the remarks at a regular press conference and also commented on Terry Gou's recent remarks on the 1992 Consensus.

Gou, in recent interviews, said he agreed that Taiwan is an inseparable party of China but he will not mention the 1992 Consensus without saying both sides are part of one China and each side can define what China means, calling on Beijing to find a peaceful basis for resolving cross-strait issues.

Ma pointed out the 1992 Consensus clearly defines the nature of the ties. The consensus reflects the adherence to the one-China principle by both sides in their efforts to seek national reunification

There is only one China in the world and both the mainland and Taiwan belong to one China, he stressed.

The spokesperson added Taiwan and mainland are a community with a shared future and the future of Taiwan lies in national reunification.

Adhering to the 1992 Consensus, opposing "Taiwan independence", promoting peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and promoting the process of peaceful reunification of the motherland are national principles and in line with the common interests of compatriots across the straits, he added.
