Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi has travelled to "foggy bottom" to meet with U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson at the US State Department.

During his meeting with Rex Tillerson, Yang Jiechi says the initial telephone conversation between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump earlier in February has achieved a consensus between both sides on further developing China-US relations.

Yang Jiechi says this consensus, plus the principles of "no conflict, no confrontation, mutual respect and win-win cooperation," will be the basis of China-US relations in the next stage. China is willing to work with the US to enhance exchanges at the highest levels, deepen bilateral cooperation in various fields and expand collaboration over issues of regional and global concern.

Yang Jiechi, a former Chinese ambassador to Washington, also says both sides need to respect each other's core interests and concerns.

For his part, Rex Tillerson recognizes the phone conversation between Xi Jinping and Donald Trump as having set a positive note for China-US relations.

The US Secretary of State says the US will approach relations with China from a broader perspective and will work with China to enhance high-level exchanges and cooperation in various fields. They will also rely on negotiations to address sensitive issues in order to push China-US relations further and promote peace and prosperity across regions and around the world.

The Tuesday meeting between China's State Councilor and US Secretary of State comes a day after Yang's conversation with US President Donald Trump, where the two sides affirmed the importance of a constructive bilateral relationship.

Yang Jiechi has also met with other Trump administration officials, including White House chief strategist Steve Bannon and Trump's new National Security Advisor, H.R. McMaster.
