China expresses confidence in Venezuela's stability

China said it believes the Venezuelan people can protect the country's stability and economic development following casualties caused by nationwide protests in the Latin American country on Wednesday.

China is aware the Venezuelan government hopes to resume talks with the opposition, Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said at a daily press briefing.

"As a friend of Venezuela, China sincerely hopes and believes that the Venezuelan people can properly handle their domestic affairs," Lu said.

A power struggle between the ruling socialist party in Venezuela and the right-wing opposition has created an economic and political crisis, and provoked widespread protests.

According to reports, anti-government protests in Venezuela's capital and 14 other states have left at least two dead, 62 injured and some 300 arrested.
