China Friday urged the United States to properly handle issues regarding Taiwan, and not to have any official and military contact in any form with the island.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang made the remarks in response to a question regarding remarks from Randall Schriver, nominee to be Assistant U.S. Secretary of Defense for Asian and Pacific Affairs.

In his nomination hearing Thursday, Schriver expressed support for exchanges of navy ship visits between the United States and Taiwan, adding such port calls were consistent with the one-China policy as the United States defines it.

"China urges the United States to honor its commitment to the one-China policy and the three Sino-U.S. joint communiques, and stop military contact and arms sales to Taiwan," Geng said.

The spokesperson said the United States should avoid harming the big picture of bilateral relations and stability across the Taiwan Strait.
