China's government is urging the United States to provide a fair and non-discriminatory environment for Chinese companies, the Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said on Wednesday.

Lu's remarks come after media reports that the United States is considering sanctioning Chinese video surveillance companies, including Hangzhou-based Hikvision Digital Technology.

"China is opposed to the United States abusing its power to discredit and suppress China's enterprises and enterprises from other countries," he said.

The spokesman also underscored the need for business relationships between the two countries to be based on mutual respect and the principle of mutually beneficial cooperation.
