Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to attend the G20 summit in Osaka, Japan later this week. Since 2013, President Xi Jinping has been part of six G20 summits, bringing China's voice and position on key global issues to one of the world's most important multilateral platforms.

The following is a summary of the views and proposals brought forward by President Xi Jinping at G20 summits over the years.

2013: Openness

At his first G20 summit, President Xi Jinping affirmed China's stance on safeguarding economic globalization in St Petersburg.

"G20 members should jointly maintain and promote the openness of the world economy and oppose all forms of trade protectionism."

2014: Innovation

Discovering new development momentum for the world's economic growth is one of the most important tasks of the G20. In the eyes of President Xi Jinping, innovation should not only be conducted in the realms of technologies and industries, but also in an all-round way in policies, conceptions and ways of development.

At the 2014 Brisbane G20 summit, President Xi Jinping said countries should innovate in their economic development patterns, adding that more vitality should be brought into the economy through structural reforms in finance, investment, trade and other fields. He urged the world's major economies to jointly promote reforms, implement comprehensive growth strategies and advance the transition of the world economy from cyclical recovery to sustainable growth.

2015: Partnership spirit

At the 2015 Antalya G20 Summit, Chinese President Xi Jinping put forward four proposals for the world to promote the development of the world economy.

"Strengthening the exchanges and coordination on the macroeconomic policies so that the policies and actions of each country could be better directed."

"Promote reforms and innovations to inject new impetus into the world economy in the long term."

"Building an open global economy and injecting more vitality in international commerce and investment."

"The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development should be realized to promote inclusive growth."

2016: Global economic governance

In 2016, Chinese President Xi Jinping pointed out at the Hangzhou G20 summit that G20 countries should make efforts to ensure the forum's transformation from responding to crisis to long-term governance mechanism and consolidate its status on the international arena on global economic governance.

President Xi Jinping elaborated for the first time his view on global economic governance featuring equality, openness, cooperation and sharing. He emphasized the importance in building equal and efficient global finance governance, open and transparent global commerce and investment governance, green and low-carbon global energy governance. and inclusive and coordinative global development governance.

2017: Coordination

In terms of the global economic governance, Chinese President Xi Jinping further put forward his proposal at the 2017 G20 summit in Hamburg, Germany.

"We should strengthen coordination of macroeconomic policies, forestall risks in financial markets and develop financial inclusion and green finance to make the financial sector truly drive the development of the real economy."

2018: Original aspiration and future

The year 2018 marked the 10th anniversary of the G20 summit. In Buenos Aires, Argentina, Chinese President Xi Jinping noted the G20 countries should adhere to openness and cooperation, partnership, innovation and win-win cooperation, as the core of G20 spirit.
