The concert was held at St John’s Smith Square in London earlier this month. The MOY youth orchestra wowed an audience of about 300 in one of the many events organized or supported by the London ETO to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

The concert at St. John’s Smith Square saw them perform a program of classical and contemporary orchestral works and folk songs, using a combination of Western and traditional Chinese instruments.

The Founding Chairman of the MOY, Mr. Gordon Siu, said, "This event has been a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate to others the positive effect our work has had on the next generation of Hong Kong people.

"We hope the concert has inspired others from similar backgrounds to get involved in projects like this to instil some self-confidence and become a part of an all-inclusive community, making a difference."

"Through music training, the MOY hopes to instil in young people the virtues of hard work, perseverance and discipline. These virtues will prepare them for their journey through life, irrespective of whether they will take on music professionally as a career in the future."

Among the audience at this exceptional concert were children from Westminster with backgrounds comparable to those of orchestra members. The aim was for children who had experienced childhood difficulties to hear music from across the world and be inspired by it, and the program received highly positive responses from families.

The event showcased performances of contemporary and classical pieces including works by Schumann, Huang Tzu and Peng Xiuweng. By using Western and Chinese instruments, the orchestra’s show symbolized Hong Kong’s unique position as a gateway between East and West.

Speaking before the concert, the Director-General of the London ETO, Ms. Priscilla To, said, "It is our great delight to support the MOY to stage tonight's concert as part of our 20th anniversary celebration program. Through this event, we will see how Hong Kong could work together to generate positive energy and bring faith and hope to a group of children that might otherwise be left out in our society."

Throughout 2017, the London ETO is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region through a program of events covering music, design, fashion, film, visual arts, cultural heritage, public celebrations, dinners and business seminars and receptions.
