McDormand has been embraced by critics for the embittered, in-your-face, avenging mother she played in "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri."

McDormand, 60, was nominated alongside Sally Hawkins ("The Shape of Water"), Margot Robbie ("I, Tonya"), Saoirse Ronan ("Lady Bird"), and Meryl Streep ("The Post").

McDormand made a plea for Hollywood to tell more female stories in her acceptance speech.

"We all have stories to tell. Invite us into your offices and we'll tell you all about them," she said.

It is the actress' fifth Oscar nomination and second win.
