The film "Robin Hood" starring Taron Egerton as Robin Hood and Academy Award-winner Jamie Foxx as Little John takes on a darker theatrical version of the English folk hero, complete with epic battle scenes and current themes modern audiences might grasp.

Director Robin Bathurst said "The way that Hollywood and the way the British film industry has handled the Robin Hood story is, as you say, in this very, very sort of quaint fairy tale kind of myth. Wherever there's corruption, wherever there's greed, wherever there's oppression, where there's an injustice, we need Robin Hood."

Bathurst said he wanted to take the classic Robin Hood story and "dump it in the 21st century and make a very, very kind of modern visceral version of it."

The film's star, Taron Egerton, said there is some pressure playing a role of this magnitude, but he had a great deal of support.

"I'm probably best known for the 'Kingsman' films but this is my first that's away from that that's with me at the center of it. I mean the pressure kind of is diminished slightly when you got Jamie Foxx's back-up."

Robin and John meet at the beginning of the movie during an epic battle with the Crusaders fighting the Moors; eventually, John's son is captured, and Robin tries to save the son's life. Robin and John later become inseparable.

Egerton said "I felt that Jamie and I would have fun together and we could each bring an energy to this relationship that would be entertaining and hopefully moving on screen. I think obviously as a fan of Jamie's, it was incredibly exciting to get to work with him as it always is when you work with an older actor you admire."

According to Foxx, he wanted his co-star to feel as comfortable as possible, regardless of the hardware he has on his mantle.

"I pass on what Quincy Jones passed on me onto him. I see him working things out, I'm there to support him and make sure he can get anything he wants off because it's important to not make him feel any kind of way but comfortable, that he can do anything he wanted to do, and I'll be there to support him".

Foxx added, "When you meet young guys that are on their way and their eyes are wide open, you can get inspired by that."

The film also includes "Fifty Shades of Grey" star Jamie Dornan. He said acting in a film of this magnitude was exciting.

"It's very cool. I felt like a little sort of boy from the first couple of days like just being on that set that big with that many people."

Ben Mendelsohn plays a convincing villainous Sheriff of Nottingham.

"The good thing about playing a bad guy is that people are like 'you really sucked in that movie. You kind of take it as a job well done".

"Robin Hood" opens in the United States on November 21.
