She plays a young woman who is trying to cope with the loss of her best friend who has taken his own life. Gillan says she got the idea for the story from reading an article about suicide rates in Scotland.
She says she enjoyed the multi-tasking challenge that came with wearing so many hats on the project.
"As for doing all three, writing directing and acting, it's severe multi-tasking to the highest-degree. Literally you have to be present in a scene and performing giving it everything and then you're like, 'Cut! OK. How did that shot look? How are we technically? We got it?' But it was sort of amazing, you know?"
Gillan says she is hoping to write and direct another film and is exploring doing something in the horror genre.
"The Party's Just Beginning" is now playing in limited release in the U.S. and will be available this month On Demand.
