Set in postwar Germany in 1946, "The Aftermath" sees Knightley's character Rachael arrive in the ruins of Hamburg to be reunited with her husband Lewis (Jason Clarke), a British colonel in charge of rebuilding the city.
But as they set off for their new home, Rachael discovers that Lewis has made an unexpected decision: They will be sharing the house with its previous owners, a German widower (Alexander Skarsgård) and his teenage daughter.
Knightley said although her character does "a lot of crying," the movie was a joy to work on:
"I was just super lucky that I was working with such lovely people and every single person – behind the camera and in front of the camera – was just a total professional and just lovely."
However, there was a downside to shooting a movie in the depths of winter. Director James Kent explained while he was able to stay relatively warm with coats and gloves, his cast - particularly Knightley - weren't so lucky.
"It was amazingly cold. It was -15 (Celsius). It was the coldest winter for 30 years."
"The Aftermath" is released in the U.K. and Ireland on 1 March.
