The Broadway revival of Richard Rodgers and Hammerstein's classic musical, The King and I, will come to China via high-definition screenings in theatres.

The King and I, produced by Lincoln Center, is included in a list of 36 top opera productions from the stages of London, New York, Moscow and beyond scheduled to come to China starting from July this year.

Set in the 1860s, "The King and I" is based on the true story of Anna Leonowens, a widowed schoolteacher from Wales who travels to Siam to teach the King's many children.

Around 25 of these 36 productions are new operas and dramas staged between 2018 and 2019 in Europe and the United States.

This year also marks National Theatre Live's 10th birthday. Eight productions from the National Theatre Live will come to China later this year, including The Lehman Trilogy by Oscar winning director Sam Mendes.

A new adaptation of The Taming of the Shrew, which includes 27 performers with disabilities from the Royal Shakespeare Company, will come to China. And another Shakespeare's opera is The Merry Wives of Windsor.

Since screening operas in cinemas was first introduced to China in 2015, Beijing ATW Culture has screened a total of 113 titles at 83 venues in 29 cities in China.
